The world is going through a difficult phase today due to the “Corona” pandemic, and this pandemic has caused the closure of many educational institutions, and imposed on us to communicate with the learners in a manner that many traditional teachers are not familiar with, which imposed on many countries to keep pace with and keep pace with this great technological development .

Distance education is a relatively modern method of education. Its basic concept depends on the presence of the teacher in one place and the learners in another place, and it is a method of teaching using modern communication mechanisms from computers, multimedia, and virtual classrooms … etc. UNESCO has defined distance education as:

“The systematic use of well-prepared printed and non-print media in order to bridge the gap between teacher and learner, and to provide full and appropriate support to learners in their studies.”

And distance education has terms that circulate among people, including:


Open Education.

Indirect education.

Independent education.

Distance teaching.

Distance learning began in some European and American universities in the late seventies. Those who think that distance education is synonymous with online education are mistaken, and the truth is that online education is one of the means of distance education.

Also, there is confusion between the concept of distance education and the concept of open education – which became famous with the opening of the Open University in the United Kingdom – and (Rountree) distinguished between them by saying: Self-learning, and distance education does not need to be open.

Many studies have confirmed that distance education is not synonymous with open education, but rather is part of open education.

Although the emotional field does not exist in this type of education, distance education has many advantages, including:

It makes the educational process a learning not an education.

The learner’s dependence on himself in this type of education, the learner is the one who chooses his sources of learning, and he is the one who pursues, searches and increases.

It does not interfere with the functionality.

It allows the learner to walk according to his own abilities and capabilities.

It is flexible; It takes into account the conditions of the learners, their conditions and their busyness.

Providing scientific, educational and cultural programs for a wide segment of society.
